Patera Magnus - a special fruit bowl

We were super happy with this blogpost by 'Huize Chaos', one of the first happy users of our Patera Magnus.

Since we make each Patera Magnus by hand (quite an extensive proces), and the high demand means we're still producing orders from last year, the Patera Magnus in use is still quite a rare sight.
(We're working on it!!)

In this Dutch blogpost, user Marieska describes how she uses the special fruit bowl and how it indeed helps her to eat more fruit and vegetables while less food ends up in the bin.

Read the full Dutch post <here>, and read all about our Patera Magnus and the Poma/Olera series <here>.

Jana Flohr / House of Thol | photograph by Gaav Content

Live from Ukraine / Overasselt

Interested in learning more about starting a sustainable design business? Join us in the Creascope 'Sustainability in Practice' seminar this Friday to learn all about it.

The sessions include presentations by a.o. Carissa ten Tije (Studio CTT), Daryna Antonenko, co-founder of Re:ban (click),  Dasha Tsapenko (via Jan van Eyck) and (drumroll) Jana Flohr of House of Thol.
It's quite a mix of brands and designers, each working on sustainable and/or circular design in their own way.

I'll be directing my talk towards our aim to create an independent sustainable brand focussed on designing durable products to make your everyday greener and easier.

Expect to hear more about our crowdfunding campaigns, the puzzle to make products that are sustainable as well as affordable and durable, and the entrepreneurial challenges we've faced thus far.

How to be part of this

Spend your Friday learning about running a sustainable design business, all from the comfort of your own home (you won't even have to wear smart pants).

Best part: it's totally free!
So register now, and i'll be looking forward to 'seeing' you this Friday.

Note: the conference is in English and is set in Ukraine, so the hours are Kyiv time (or EET <click>) in other words: one hour ahead of Amsterdam (CET) and two hours ahead of London (GMT).

Sustainability in Practice // DAY 2

'Kunstenaars in coronatijd' - extensive interview on local station GL8

11/11/2020

Local station GL8

Picture
GL8 is a local TV station catering to Heumen, Mook & Middelaar, together home to about 25.000 people (+ the House of Thol Headquarters).
The municipality of Heumen (Overasselt, Nederasselt, Malden & Heumen) is located in the Dutch province of Gelderland (G), whereas neighbouring Mook & Middelaar (Mook. Molenhoek, Middelaar & Plasmolen) is part of the province of Limburg (L), 8 villages in total on the border of Gelderland and Limburg: GL8.
With so many people and businesses affected by corona, the station decided to get in touch with some of the professional creatives in the community to see how they are coping with the situation.
GL8 made a total series of 8 episodes, and we were featured in number 7!
It aired last Weekend, but wasn't available on Youtube to share until now.
Note: in Dutch only!

The blissful in-between

The small GL8 crew came over when summer was still hot, although fall was closing in. Oh those blissful last weeks of summer!

I remember chatting with presenter Anasuya in between takes when she mentioned "What a shame it won't air until the fall, when corona is probably over", to which we responded "There might be a second wave?" Although it did seem like so far off at the time.
We really had no idea how little time we would have left in the 'in between'.
Taped in only a few hours, the full episode is almost 25 (!) minutes long.
Got half an hour to spare?
<click here> to see the full video.

For those of us with a little less ability to focus on something that long, i cut out a few snippets of the interview, each addressing a different topic.
There's still loads to see in the video that didn't make it to these cuts. So if you like to know more about the way we work, definitely check out the full episode when you have a chance.

Credits & Sad news

Made by director Hans van Diest and presenter Anasuya Koopmans, with Peter Schrik handling the camera and mantage.

Sadly, about a week after the taping, we received news that Mr. van Diest had suddenly passed away, which is a great loss, both for his family, the local station and the whole community.

"Export price for entrepreneurs who used to kill their houseplants"

Picture
Last Tuesday we had a nice interview with journalist Joost Ariaans from newspaper De Gelderlander, who brought photographer Theo Peeters to the House of Thol headquarters to get to know about our company and learn more about the MKB Export Award.
All while maintaining a save 1,5 meter distance, of course.

And look at this lovely piece in Todays' edition!
We're super happy with the article, and with all the messages we're receiving from the lovely people in the area who spotted us.
Well. With the size of that photograph, we're hard to miss...
(And yes, House of Thol seriously started with us not being able to keep our plants alive 💁‍♀️)

Trouw on the downsides of a full fruitbowl

Poma/Olera in the newspaper

When launching our Poma/Olera series during the last Dutch Design Week (read all about it here) we had a lovely chat with journalist Jasmijn Missler of Dutch newspaper Trouw.
Although this hasn't boiled down to a 'real' article in the newspaper yet, we're happy to get a little mention in this piece about food waste.
Check it out here:
Picture

Not the whole story (yet)

In the article the Poma/Olera is mentioned briefly and described as a fruit bowl making it possible to keep different kinds of fruit and vegetables in separate compartments to avoid them being subject to the ethylene gas emitted by ripening fruits like apples and bananas.
Which is, of course, very true.

But the Poma/Olera series has more dimensions than just separating different fruits.
The fruitbowl also has multiple presentation platters for fruits that should be eaten first, while also serving as a lid  keeping the stock below in a dark and slightly cooler (due to evaporation cooling) space.

Also part of the series is ripening bowl Patera Maturus which uses ethylene gas emitted by certain fruits to speed up the ripening process of other varieties like avocado or mango.
Read article (online)
Read article (PDF)
The reason we're expanding a little on the subject, is because later on the article mentions a couple of things you can do to keep fruit and vegetables fresh for longer and Poma/Olera pretty much covers them all.

Happy to know our extensive homework during the research phase paid off ;-).

3 kilo's of Dutch Art

We're in the 'Grote Nederlandse Kunstkalender'! - publication by Trichis, photograph by House of Thol
The 'Grote Nederlandse Kunstkalender' or 'Big Dutch Art Calender' is a beast of a calendar: weighing more than three (3!) Kilograms, the calender features a new piece of Dutch Art every day of the year.

A mix of fine arts, photography, illustration, product design, architecture and graphic design, the selection consists of work by upcoming talents as well as from big names in the Dutch world of art and design.

We're super proud and happy to be featured in next years' edition.

And not just featured... the Dutch Master-inspired photograph of our Flower Constellations we made with Masha Bakker is on the front page!

It took me quite some time flipping pages to find 'our' day: Monday November 23rd 2020.

So save that date as House of Thol day next year!
Or better yet, get the calender!

One for your wishlist

While going through the pages, i spotted so many gogeous works of art that we can look forward to next year.

Need a little December inspiration? I can highly reccommend adding the 'Grote Nederlandse Kunstkalender' to your wishlist.

Or go ahead and get the calender for your significant other so you can enjoy a full year of Dutch Art together.

The Grote Nederlandse Kunstkalender can be bought for €34,95 (ex. shipping) via Trichis.

Sublime radio // Nieuws van de vooruitgang

Sublime is a Dutch radio station all about soul, funk and jazz. Aside from music, they feature a super cool side step into sustainable and social progress every hour called 'Nieuws van de vooruitgang' (news of progress).

During the opening weekend of the Dutch Design Week i had a chat about our Poma/Olera with lovely Francis Broekhuijsen, who kindly smiled all the way through my story while taping it. (sweet man for noticing i got a little nervous)

Sander and Francis zoom in on the Dutch Design Week fairly quick, and the Poma Olera series is the first project  discussed.

A tale of two sisters

Sisters Astrid and Linda, both creative minds, have put their love for all things beautiful and special to digital paper with their blog 'No Ordinary Tales'.
On it, they share DIY's, recipes and all creative things they come up with. Once every while, they share the work of a fellow creative entrepreneur or creative hotspots to visit.

Worth a visit!

We're super excited Linda and Astrid wrote a lovely piece about our Flower Constellations last week. Thank you so much for sharing!

"Da's slim"

Rarely did we get so many friends telling us they saw our Flower Constellations in a magazine as we did with this mention in Flow magazine. :-)

We're super excited to be in the gorgeous publication since we love the quality and feel of the magazine.
It should still be in stores now, and comes with a super nice notebook (that i'm actually using at this moment).

Thank you Flow, for the spotlight!

Libra in bloom

Super happy with this full page publication of our Flower Constellation in Happinez magazine earlier this spring.

Happinez is really one of those magazines that people take with them on a relaxing vacation.
Proof: our sister-in-law took this Happinez with her to the other side of the world, and was happily surprised (and a little proud ;-)) to find us in there.

We're nominated for the MKB Export Award!!

About the Award

We participated in the MKB Export Award 2018 and are part of the Top 9!

The MKB Export Award is organised for the 6th year in a row by TNT Netherlands, The Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO.nl) and Royal Organisation MKB-Nederland.
Of the more than 100 contestants, the Jury nominated us and 8 other companies.

The winner will be revealed during the event 'Klaar voor de start? Export! ("Ready? Get set! Export!) on Tuesday March 19th 2019.

Who knows, we might be succeeding last years' winner Anne Pleun van Eijsden of 'On the Rocks' and go home with the prize: amongst others a transport cheque and business partner scan!
It all started with our participation in the Paris fair Maison&Objet last September, for which we applied for an Export Mission Voucher.

After the fair we got invited to join the MKB Export Award, and since we really think we can conquer the world with our Flower Constellations and can use a little boost to get us going, we applied.

In January we received a phonecall from the organization surprising us with the news we're on the shortlist!
Early February we got to show a small part of the jury around House of Thol headquarters, and tell them all about our designs, projects and plans for the future.
We had a lovely chat, as i'm sure they had with all other eight nominees.

Now all that's left to do is wait..... With our fingers crossed...
We'll keep you posted!

One week till Object Rotterdam!

Only 1 (ONE) week to go before our presentation at Object Rotterdam should be ready to roll.
We're about to be starting prep on lighting and stands in just a minute.
Still quite a few final decisions to be made, i'm afraid.
But i'm sure we'll  make it work.
Before we head to our workshop however, i wanted to celebrate the Object PR-department for getting the expo out there.
We're super happy with our designs being part of some of the online press-coverage of Object Rotterdam.

"Arrange your birthflowers" - Flower Constellations in Buitenleven

We almost missed this publication

We always try to keep track of whenever a design is mentioned in a magazine, so we can get our hands on a copy and be proud about it at the time the issue is actually in the stores.
But sometimes we miss the memo, and a magazine is already out the stores before we can catch on and get our hands on a copy.

We were a little late to the news the Flower Constellations were featured in 2018' last issue of magazine Buitenleven.
Although we don't actually have a hard copy in our possession, luckily we did receive a pdf of the piece (which you can find below).

Super happy with the spotlight. Thank you Buitenleven!
