House of Thol x Ay IlluminateDutch design lighting brand Ay Illuminate is well-known for their collection of eclectic handmade lightshades that are consciously produced in social projects all over the world.
House of Thol was asked to design a sustainable lighting so called lightshade that could be handmade in collaboration with a Dutch social enterprise providing employment for people with and without disabilities. Little birdiesThe lightshades come in two models named after two types of small, charming birds: Wren and Kiwi.
Each model comes in both M size (D44 x H48/52 cm) and L size (D56 x H60/64 cm) and we created one XL showstopper (D98 x H84 cm). |
Contemporary Minimalist or Natural EclecticLooking for a contemporary circular lightshade or a natural eclectic piece?
With Wren and Kiwi sustainable lighting, you can go both ways. The white series is made with perforated strips of (98%) recycled aluminum, the layering of the perforations creating a subtle moiré effect and filtered ambient lighting. The bamboo series is produced with made-to-fit bamboo strips, sourced from one of the other Ay Illuminate projects. The warm glow of the light shining through the bamboo highlights its natural knots and imperfections, creating a unique piece every time. |
Lovinlgy handmade sustainable lightingThe Ecoplex frames are CnC lasered at Nijmegen based company Samosa and shipped flat-pack to the workshop.
Once there, each piece is lightly sanded before being assembled by hand and without needing tools or any kind of fastener like glue or screws. After the assembly of the frame, each individual strip is carefully woven through it to and folded back to create a natural clamp. Building them this way, means the Wren & Kiwi lightshades are reparable and can be taken apart into separate materials for an efficient recycling process when needed. Sizes: Wren M: 44 cm (w), 52cm (h) Wren L: 56 cm (w), 64 cm (h) Kiwi M: 44 cm (w), 48cm (h) Kiwi L: 56 cm (w), 60 cm (h) XL: 98 cm (w), 84 cm (h) |
