Waterworks is a natural plant watering system that makes caring for your houseplants incredibly easyEach set consists of a terra-cotta cone and a water globe for plants reservoir.
The olla-inspired watering system technique establishes a natural connection between the terra-cotta cone and its surrounding soil and roots. The glass reservoir makes it easy to tell when it's time to refill. |
About the conesA plants' demand for water varies depending on the size and type of plant as well as the current season.
Make sure to choose the appropriate cone for your plant: - Small: more glaze, smaller porous surface / for plants that don't need a lot of water. - Medium / for most plants - Large: less glaze, larger porous surface / for thirsty (or) larger plants. Each Waterworks water globe for plants set comes with one cone in either medium, large or small (€29,-). The cones are available separately as well (€13,-), making it possible to interchange them per season. Since the diameter of the cone is a fit for most bottles, this also opens up the opportunity to repurpose your special beer bottle collection into something useful and green. |

How to work your WaterworksWater Globe for Plants1. Submerge the terra-cotta cone in water long enough to saturate the material
2. Carefully push the cone into the soil near the roots of your plant
3. Fill the glass reservoir with water and place in the terra-cotta cone - Refill when empty :-)
NB - in rare cases, the filled water globe can act as a magnifying glass for sun rays, pay attention to that when placing your plant

The Waterworks storyBack when we first started living together, we were having trouble keeping our houseplants alive. We kept forgetting to water our plants for sometimes weeks, to then decide on the exact same day the plant could do with a fresh plunge, after which we would both water the plant on that same day, effectively triggering root-rot by overwatering.
We needed help. After trying many plant watering systems yet failing to find something that both worked well and looked decent enough to not want to hide behind the plant, we took matters into our own hands. Inspired by the ancient technique of the 'olla' we created Waterworks in 2013. Waterworks was launched in August 2014 after a successfull crowdfunding campaign on Dutch Design Starter. The design went on to be nominated for a German Design Award in 2015. In the spring of 2020 we relaunched Waterworks water globe for plants with an enhanced design. By removing the cork from the reservoir we didn't just improve the effectiveness of the system, we also reduced the resources needed and were able to lower the price. With Waterworks now available at more and more places all over the world, we feel like its story is only just beginning. |

how should i care for my Waterworks-set?
The glass reservoir of the Waterworks-set can be cleaned with hot water whenever you like.
To get rid of green spots, clean with a mixture of water, vinegar and salt or backing soda and use a bottle brush to get everywhere.
We very seldomly clean the cones, but if you feel like the calcium of the water has diminished the working of the system, clean out the scales with a bit of vinegar.

How long does it take to ship Waterworks?
Whenever you place an order in our webshop, we aim to have your product out of the door within two working days.
However, please note: we are two people and sometimes, when we have a show or exhibition, it may take a few days extra.
If you absolutely need to have your order sent out Today, place your order before 12 noon and pop us a little e-mail to let us know you are in a hurry.
We will do our absolute best to make it happen for you!
Once the product is in the mail, the time it takes to reach your doorstep is depending on where that doorstep is located.
Within the Netherlands it usually takes about a day to arrive, in the surrounding countries a few days, and progressively longer the further your parcel has to travel.
Obviously things like global pandemics can cause delays, but i guess we're all used to that by now.

Wait, didn't waterworks use to come with a cork?
Yes! You're absolutely right, you early adapter you!
When we first launched Waterworks in 2013/2014, the reservoir had a cork stopper.
We decided on the stopper because it would make it easier to clean the reservoir. And it did.
However, we noticed that cleaning the reservoir isn't actually that hard, and isn't something that's done very often.
Instead, whenever the cork was not an airtight fit, the reservoir would leak air, effectively breaking the vacuum that was keeping the water in place and causing Waterworks-sets to drain too fast. We got a lot of questions about that. A lot.
Also, an extra material meant extra resources and a lot of extra work during packing and handling.
That's why, in the spring of 2020, we relaunched Waterworks with an enhanced design and a new (lower) price, ready to take over the world!

can i use the cones without the reservoir?
Yes! You definitely can!
You can use it without any kind of reservoir, it's just difficult to spot when the water is running out + you need to refill regularly.
The top diameter of the cone also makes it possible to hack with most kinds of bottles.
Two things: First make sure the bottles are cleaned and there is definitely no alcohol remaining, as that would effectively poison your plant;
and secondly use smaller (beer)bottles rather than larger (wine)bottles, as these can be too heavy and topple over.

Why Do i need to soak the cone in water before placing it in the soil?
Great question!
It's not actually an absolute must, but since the natural system works by passing on its moisture level to the surrounding soil, the sooner there is a 'moisture-connection' between the soil and the cone, the better.
We noticed that if the soil is too dry, it can be difficult to start up that connection and get the system going, hence the advice to moisten the cone before placing it in the soil.
